Fashion Revolution ATX #001

“The fight for truth is not just our right as free citizens of free societies. It is our duty as citizens of the Earth.” — Vandana Shiva

I was scrolling through the official Fashion Revolution Facebook page and came across their post thanking everyone for participating in this year’s revolution week: “…this has been our noisiest and most inspiring yet!” Well, they must have been talking about the noise coming from Austin because you all were buzzing! It was a packed room and every seat was occupied. We had fantastic speakers covering topics from supply chain, to building an ethical fashion community, to the environmental costs of fast fashion and more.

We are so grateful for and inspired by the excitement and energy that filled Soma Vida on Fashion Revolution Day. We are thrilled that everyone was so engaged in the discussions happening around each table. We hope you left that night feeling more informed and more inspired to carry on with the revolution.

The global Fashion Revolution team is still gathering information and feedback from all the events that took place around the world, so stay tuned for a final recap of the full impact FRD had this year. We know it’s going to be big and you can proudly say you played a part in bringing this global movement to Austin.

So, what’s next? As mentioned in our last blog post, Fashion Revolution isn’t just one day. It is a movement and our hope for organizing the FRD event was to share with the Austin community the facts about fast fashion as well as encourage everyone to think about what he or she can do as a consumer. You have a lot of power when it comes to where you choose to spend your money. Remember, you don’t have to change everything right away, these changes can be small. Keep asking questions and putting pressure on fast-fashion brands by asking #whomademyclothes.

“It isn’t enough just looking for quality in the products we buy, we must ensure that there is quality in the lives of the people that make them.”     — Orsola de Castro
